Safe Search Practices
  • Do not extend payment or hold deposit to anyone you have not met in person
  • Never wire funds (e.g. Western Union) - anyone who asks you to is a scammer
  • Never give out financial info (bank account, social security, paypal account, etc) over the phone or email
  • Do not rent or purchase sight-unseen
  • Avoid background/credit checks until you have met property representative in person
  • Avoid landlords who refuse to meet or speak on the phone and only communicate via email
  • Contact a case manager if you feel uncomfortable discussing your voucher with a landlord
  • Request a receipt for any deposits or money given for a background or credit check
  • Attend housing search groups operated by VA Jamaica Plain, VA Brockton, and VA Causeway CBOC
